Causes of bumps in Lawns:

To fix the bumps and the unevenness, we need to know why they occurred. Usually, an underlying problem first needs to be addressed to find a long term fix.

Another common culprit for erosion can be the sprinkler system. The water lines are usually prone to damage, and regular maintenance is required for the course. The spray heads and rotors’ working should be checked frequently using soil levelling rake.

This is to ensure that they are popping up to the full height and that the nozzles are not clogged, damaged, or leaking.

Ground settling that happens over time is also a common cause of a bumpy lawn. It usually causes depressions. This is unavoidable. Especially in a new property, or yard work was using large equipment on the lawn.

Cold-winter climates with freezing/thawing cycles also cause soil to become bumpy and uneven. And similarly, Spring also causes clay soil to thaw unevenly, which causes bumps. This heaves and creates ripples in the lawn, giving it a bunched-up carpet kind of look.

Another lawn bumpiness source merely has a thin lawn from a disease or insect problem that is weakening an area. This results in patches of bare soil. These areas then erode even deeper with rainfall, wind, and activity, resulting in depressions compared to a healthy lawn’s surrounding area.

This was the primary source of unevenness in my front yard, and that’s why I desperately needed a soil levelling rake.

Wood debris from construction, which should be removed, gets buried and causes bumps. When people walk on lawns that are too soft as in early Spring or after heavy rains, they also contribute to bumps. Animals, be wild or domestic, at times dig holes in lawns. The bumps caused by burrowing animals, like groundhogs or moles, need to be removed or repelled.

Ant mounds also cause significant bumps and are readily visible due to the presence of ants. In general, antibiotics are not a source of nuisance and can help keep a check on the pests. The formation of large mounds by them can cause a problem.

Modes to Level a Bumpy Lawn:

My little one would often trip while running over the bumps or low spots caused over my lawn years. I started to read and watch youtube channels in effect to the same. I was so obsessed that I conducted detailed research, and this article will provide an outline of the results and my ideas on how to go forward on using soil levelling rake.

Though I have no plans to put green standards except that is a continuous process that is very simple yet effective in making a difference in the lawn’s quality.

Importance of a Level Lawn

A level lawn free from bumps or depressions provides a smooth and usable surface to walk on. Carrying out any kind of either by kids or adults activity will be safe and more enjoyable.

Such a lawn also contributes to a healthier and manageable maintenance lawn. It provides a better quality and is time significant as the mower will not be jumping around.

Low bumps become more of a concern because the mower blade level drops, plunging it into the higher spots and cutting the grass too short. Also, the collection of water in the holes and low spots increases the risk of lawn diseases.

How to Level your Lawn?

Before even you start, assessing the severity of the problem helps to dictate the situation’s approach. Do the small bumps and unevenness of the lawn look like the moon surface? Topdressing the small holes and depressions or just filling them in and re-seeding can prove to be a great option.

However, in case of severe problems, the need to resort to aggressive treatment such as re-grading will arise.

Leveling Out Smaller irregularities

Small size bumps may be flattened by stepping on them during the spring months when the ground is soft, or better yet, you can use a soil levelling rake. A water-filled roller can be filled about a third full of water and go back and forth over the lawn.

To create a more smooth surface, the process can be repeated by adding more water. However, overdoing the same can cause other problems as rolling will compact the soil.

Topdressing

This is the least invasive approach, and I have used the same to address most of my front yard issues with this as it works well for leveling mildly uneven areas. I plan on doing this again in Spring with a soil levelling rake, which I hope will improve the results. The necessary steps areas :

  • The lawn should be mowed at the possible  lowest setting
  • A garden rake or de-thatcher should be used to Dethatch the yard.
  • Compost based mixes are suitable for a level mix and can be used in a wheelbarrow
  • A shovel can be used to apply scoops of soil mix to lower areas of a lawn.
  • The topdressing can be raked to spread it out evenly. Apply 1/4″-1/2″ of soil mixture on top of the low areas. Avoid smothering the grass by using only 1/2″ of the quantity.
  • With a soil levelling rake, add the soil mixture into the grass as thoroughly as possible.
  • Watering the grass to stabilize further it is an essential aspect and
  • The progress of the area should be monitored. If still uneven, repeat the steps until it levels. The smaller low spots and depressions can be gradually corrected by sprinkling top dressing over them.

Lawn rakes, also called leaf rakes or springtime rakes, can be used to collect leaves. However, they tend to be more versatile compared to leaf rakes. They also are more flexible, mainly when used on an uneven ground.

A soil levelling rake typically have relatively wide and flat heads. Their most common use is to level up and spread ground materials like sand and soil. In case you have work in larger areas, you can opt for the mechanized landscape rakes that can be attached to tractors.

Why a DIY lawn/soil levelling rake is not a good idea?

Most home gardeners usually wonder how to make a lawn leveling rake. It is an understandable gardening approach since a diy lawn leveling drag saves costs, and you can customize it to your requirements.

However, making your leveling rake can come with its challenges. First, most people do not use the right tools when constructing their leveling rakes. As a result, DIY rakes are usually prone to frequent breakdowns. What’s more, they are generally not as efficient as commercial types.

A professional advice is usually given when you go to purchase a lawn leveling equipment. Therefore, you are most likely to end up buying a tool that suits your height and mowing style. And a levelawn rake helps you effectively cover a wider area, being effortless.

Closing Remarks

Equipped with the right gardening tools yields a better experience in the garden. As a result, one has more reasons to love gardening. The lawn levelers that we talked about are among the best to help you get super results on your lawn.

Therefore,  adding one of them to your gardening tools is highly recommended. Personally, my top pick is the Rocklin Industry Levelawn Tool. A landscape rake rental is remarkable at evenly leveling the dirt and soil.  Also, it has enhanced functionality, and mobility.
